Studies have shown with the proper high-protein and mineral rich diet provided by supplemental feeding, antler growth is reaching trophy-class at an earlier age.   

The developing antler is made up of 80% protein on a dry matter basis. Fawns require a diet of up to 20% protein to support growth and antler point development. According to recent studies, after weaning, buck fawns fed a 16% protein diet had larger antlers than those fed 4.5% and 9.5% protein diets.

Across all age classes, a minimum of a 16% protein diet is ideal during the antler growing period. Antler growth periods require higher energy diets than maintenance periods, especially in yearling bucks. 

When a buck’s diet is low in protein during these antler growth periods, all of that protein is going toward the young buck’s energy requirements, not its antler growth, resulting in smaller antlers. When yearling bucks have access to an enriched diet, the supplemental protein is able to go toward antler growth, resulting in higher antler beam diameter, length, and points at a younger age. Providing bucks with high levels of beneficial minerals such as calcium and phosphorus can also help jumpstart antler growth. 

These minerals are beneficial aid in milk production for pregnant does, boost metabolism and encourage stronger bone density and antler growth. In past studies, optimum antler and body growth were obtained when deer were fed a diet containing 0.64% calcium and 0.56% phosphorus.  

Aromatic deer attractants draw deer from the surrounding landscape right to your feeder. A whitetail’s sense of smell is about four times better than that of a human. This means deer have a greater capacity to both detect and transmit scent signals to their brains. The deer will be able to detect the aroma of the attractant from miles away and be drawn toward the smell of the food. Recent studies have shown that deer rely primarily on memory to navigate their foraging options and will adapt to changes in resource availability if given. The combination of a high-protein, aromatic attractant and a deer’s spatial and attribute memory will result in longer times at the feeder, recurring visits to the feeder, and the establishment of your feeder as a buck’s new home range. 

Standard carbohydrate-based deer feeds are not providing enough protein for your bucks as they move through different seasons and developmental stages. The age of the deer as well as the season of the year affect the amounts of nutrition the animals need. Bucks will increase food consumption during antler development and the doe will consume more feed during lactation. 

During the fall and winter seasons, after weaning, fawns will increase the food consumption.  Doe deer also have higher nutritional requirements during the fall and winter months to improve reproductive success. These nutritional requirements are not met by a standard grain feed, and studies conducted by Texas Parks and Wildlife biologists have indicated that vast acreages of Texas’ deer range are overgrazed by domestic livestock and the levels of crude protein in available deer forage are below desired levels.
